The Ministry of Defence has signed contracts worth approximately ₹4,106 crore for the acquisition of the GSAT-7C communication satellite for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Varunastra Heavyweight Torpedoes for the Indian Navy, marking a significant boost to India’s indigenous defence capabilities.

The contract for the GSAT-7C communication satellite, valued at ₹2,563 crore, was signed with NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), Bengaluru. Designed, developed and manufactured indigenously, the satellite will enhance secure, resilient and seamless communication capabilities for Indian Air Force assets, thereby strengthening operational effectiveness.

The second contract, worth ₹1,543 crore, was awarded to Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), Hyderabad, for Varunastra Heavyweight Torpedoes. Developed indigenously by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), Varunastra is a ship-launched anti-submarine torpedo equipped with advanced manoeuvring capabilities. It is designed to engage enemy submarines at long ranges, significantly enhancing the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities.

The contracts were signed in New Delhi on 15 October 2026 in the presence of Shri A. Anbarasu, Additional Secretary and Director General (Acquisition), Department of Defence.

These acquisitions represent a major step towards strengthening India’s defence preparedness while advancing domestic defence manufacturing and technological innovation. The projects reaffirm the Government’s commitment to Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India, with a focus on achieving self-reliance in critical defence technologies and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers.
