Safeguarding India’s vast coastline demands precision, preparedness, seamless coordination and an unwavering commitment to national security. Reinforcing this mission, the Indian Coast Guard Regional Headquarters (North West) conducted Exercise Sagar Kavach-02/2026 on October 8–9, 2026, across Gujarat and the Union Territory of Daman and Diu, reaffirming the nation’s resolve to protect its maritime frontiers against emerging threats.

Designed to validate critical Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and assess operational effectiveness, the exercise simulated seaward security challenges, testing the alertness, response capabilities and inter-agency coordination of the country’s coastal security architecture.

The scale and complexity of the exercise underscored its strategic significance. Seventeen agencies, one major port, 32 non-major ports, and 100 air and sea assets came together in a comprehensive demonstration of operational preparedness. From surveillance and threat identification to rapid response and coordinated interception, the exercise emphasized the importance of a unified, intelligence-driven and action-oriented approach to coastal defence.

The active participation of the Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, Border Security Force, National Security Guard, Gujarat Police, Central Industrial Security Force, customs authorities, maritime agencies, Gujarat Maritime Board and other allied stakeholders highlighted the strength of India’s multi-agency security framework. Their synchronized efforts demonstrated how seamless communication, clearly defined responsibilities and coordinated action are essential to addressing complex maritime security scenarios.

Beyond testing operational procedures, Exercise Sagar Kavach-02/2026 reinforced a vital national priority: a secure coastline is the foundation of a secure nation. Effective coastal defence protects strategic installations, ports, maritime trade, coastal communities and critical economic interests, while strengthening the country’s ability to respond swiftly to unconventional and asymmetric threats.

The exercise also highlighted the importance of continuous preparedness, inter-agency interoperability and operational vigilance in an increasingly complex maritime environment. By bringing multiple security and maritime stakeholders onto a common operational platform, it provided an opportunity to assess existing capabilities, identify areas for improvement and further strengthen the coastal security grid.

With its commitment to vigilance, coordination and mission readiness, the Indian Coast Guard continues to play a pivotal role in safeguarding India’s maritime interests. Exercise Sagar Kavach-02/2026 stands as a powerful demonstration of the collective determination of India’s maritime and security agencies to remain alert, prepared and united in the face of evolving challenges.

India’s coastal security is strengthened not by any single agency, but by the collective resolve, professionalism and readiness of every stakeholder working together to protect the nation’s maritime frontiers.
