The historic 410-kilometre riverine expedition “Hooghly Sankalp – MENU 2026” concluded successfully today at the iconic Man o’ War Jetty, Kolkata, with the ceremonial flagging-in of the expedition contingent.
The 60 Naval NCC cadets, who undertook the challenging journey from Farakka to Kolkata, sailed into the city aboard the expedition boats, accompanied by a vessel of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and dedicated safety boats. They were welcomed by senior dignitaries, officials, families and well-wishers, marking the culmination of an arduous yet rewarding expedition.
The expedition was conducted under the leadership of Expedition Commander Cdr Sanjib Sharan and Safety Officer Cdr Mrinmoy Ghosh.
A Journey Beyond Adventure:
Conceived to promote youth empowerment, civil-military synergy, national integration and awareness of India’s waterways, “Hooghly Sankalp” went far beyond a conventional adventure expedition.
During the voyage, the river became a “floating classroom”, providing cadets with opportunities to interact with communities and undertake meaningful initiatives focused on environmental conservation, social awareness, health and national integration.

Championing River and Environmental Conservation:
The expedition placed strong emphasis on river health and ecological awareness. Cadets participated in initiatives promoting the conservation of the Gangetic River Dolphin and the protection of the Ganga river ecosystem.
They also conducted live water-quality tests and demonstrated practical models of rainwater harvesting and cost-effective water purification, highlighting the importance of responsible water management.
A millet awareness initiative and competition was also organised to promote the nutritional and environmental benefits of millets and encourage healthier and sustainable food choices.
Taking Social Messages to the Grassroots:
As part of its community outreach programme, the expedition spearheaded the “Nesha Mukti Abhiyan”, raising awareness about the dangers of substance abuse.
The cadets also conducted awareness activities on cyber safety under “Cyber Suraksha”, prevention of child marriage, and HPV and preventive health awareness, taking important social messages directly to communities along the river.
Strengthening National Integration:
The expedition provided cadets with valuable opportunities to connect with communities and understand the diverse social and cultural landscape along the river.
Visits to border areas, interactions with security personnel and the symbolic gesture of tying Rakhis to security personnel reinforced the spirit of national solidarity. The cadets also visited major industrial establishments such as NTPC and explored important historical and heritage sites, gaining a deeper appreciation of India’s industrial and cultural legacy.
Showcasing the Potential of National Waterway:
In collaboration with the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), “Hooghly Sankalp” also highlighted the immense potential of National Waterway-1 for sustainable navigation, commercial transportation and regional economic development.
The expedition demonstrated 6ĺľllľIndia’s inland waterways can play an increasingly important role in sustainable connectivity while providing young people with a first-hand understanding of the country’s maritime and riverine heritage.
A Voyage of Courage, Service and Transformation:
As the expedition boats finally came to rest at Man o’ War Jetty, the successful completion of “Hooghly Sankalp – MENU 2026” marked more than the end of a 410-kilometre journey.
It stands as a testament to discipline, courage, teamwork, environmental stewardship, community service and national integration. For the 60 Naval NCC cadets, the expedition was an experience in leadership and resilience—transforming the Hooghly and Ganga waterways into a classroom for adventure, service and nation-building.
With its successful culmination in Kolkata, “Hooghly Sankalp – MENU 2026” has set a notable benchmark for adventure-based youth engagement and community outreach, reaffirming the NCC’s commitment to nurturing confident, responsible and socially conscious young citizens.
