India were crowned champions of the AHF Women’s Junior Asia Cup 2026 after defeating hosts China 1-0 in a tightly contested final on Sunday, successfully defending their continental title for the third consecutive time.
Sanika Chandrakant Mane scored the decisive goal in the 17th minute, producing a clever deflection from a long slap-push into the circle to beat Chinese goalkeeper Xu Mengjiao. The victory not only secured India’s third successive Junior Asia Cup title but also earned them qualification for the FIH Junior Women’s World Cup.
The final began cautiously, with China enjoying more possession and looking to put India under pressure. However, India’s well-organised defence remained composed and prevented the hosts from creating any clear opportunities as the opening quarter ended goalless.
India broke the deadlock early in the second quarter. Mane showed excellent awareness and intelligent movement to get behind a Chinese defender and position herself close to goal. She then expertly deflected the incoming pass into the net to give India a 1-0 lead.
China had their best opportunity to equalise when they earned the match’s only penalty corner. However, their attempt was ruled out after the ball entered the goal above the permitted backboard height.
India came close to doubling their advantage shortly before half-time when captain Khaidem Shileima Chanu tested the Chinese goalkeeper, who reacted quickly to keep the effort out.
China returned after the break with greater attacking intent and created a promising opportunity early in the third quarter. A dangerous baseline move ended with a pass across the face of goal, but India’s defence anticipated the danger and made a crucial interception.
The final quarter was dominated by India’s defensive discipline. The defending champions stayed compact and organised around their circle, frustrating China’s attempts to find an equaliser. Despite sustained pressure from the hosts, India held their nerve to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory and lift the trophy.
India completed the tournament unbeaten, having topped the Elite Pool with three wins and a draw before defeating South Korea 5-1 in the semi-final. Their victory over China in the final completed a remarkable hat-trick of Women’s Junior Asia Cup titles.
In recognition of the achievement, Hockey India announced prize money of ₹3 lakh for each player and ₹1.5 lakh for every member of the support staff.
