Indian Navy’s sail training ship INS Sudarshini arrived at Livorno, Italy, on September 9 as part of the ongoing transoceanic expedition Lokayan 2026, marking another significant milestone in the Navy’s maritime outreach and international engagement.
During the deployment, INS Sudarshini has covered more than 17,400 nautical miles across 10 countries, showcasing India’s rich maritime heritage while strengthening bonds of friendship and cooperation with partner nations.
Prior to entering Livorno, the Indian sail training ship conducted a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with the Italian Navy’s sail training ship ITS Palinuro in the Mediterranean Sea. The exercise featured coordinated manoeuvring and sail-handling drills, enabling the crews of both vessels to exchange professional expertise and enhance interoperability.
The port call at Livorno, home to the prestigious Italian Naval Academy (Accademia Navale), will provide further opportunities for professional interaction between the Indian and Italian navies. Cross-deck visits and engagements between Indian trainees and Italian cadets are scheduled as part of the visit. INS Sudarshini will also be open to visitors during the port call, further contributing to maritime diplomacy and people-to-people engagement.
The ongoing Lokayan 2026 expedition underscores the Indian Navy’s commitment to strengthening maritime partnerships, promoting professional exchanges and advancing India’s maritime outreach across regions.
The deployment is aligned with India’s MAHASAGAR vision — Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions — and reflects New Delhi’s continued focus on building stronger maritime cooperation with partner nations.
