India ended a 20-year wait for a place in the AFC U-20 Asian Cup, defeating Bangladesh 3-0 in their final Group B qualifier at the Do’stlik Stadium on Sunday.
The Blue Colts produced a composed and dominant display, with Danny Meitei Laishram, Vishal Yadav and Md Arbash finding the net to secure India’s passage to the AFC U-20 Asian Cup China 2027.
Danny opened the scoring in the 25th minute before Vishal doubled India’s advantage with an acrobatic finish shortly after the hour mark. Substitute Arbash then put the result beyond doubt with a powerful strike in the 79th minute.
The victory lifted India to six points from three matches, enough to finish second in Group B and qualify as one of the seven best runners-up across the eight qualifying groups.
Uzbekistan topped the group with nine points after beating Syria, who finished third with three points. Bangladesh ended the campaign without a point and were relegated to the Development Phase.
The AFC U-20 Asian Cup China 2027 will be played from March 24 to April 10, 2027. The top four finishers at the continental tournament will earn qualification for the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2027.
Danny breaks the deadlock:
The contest began cautiously, with both sides struggling to establish control in the opening exchanges. India, however, gradually increased the pressure and made their dominance count in the 25th minute.
Danny’s relentless pressing forced Bangladesh defender Md Abdul Riyad Fahim into a mistake, allowing Hateem Ali to collect possession. Hateem then drew two defenders before finding an unmarked Danny inside the penalty area.
Danny kept his composure and calmly finished to give India the lead.
The goal injected confidence into the Blue Colts, who began controlling possession and dictating the tempo. Danny came close to adding a second in the 34th minute when his looping free-kick dipped dangerously towards goal, but Bangladesh goalkeeper Raj Chowdhury made an important save.
Vishal doubles India’s advantage:
India continued from where they left off after the interval, maintaining pressure and looking for another breakthrough.
The second goal arrived in the 60th minute. A long throw into the Bangladesh penalty area was flicked on by Rishikanta towards Vishal Yadav, who produced an acrobatic finish to beat Chowdhury and make it 2-0.
Bangladesh responded by committing more players forward and playing with greater aggression, but India remained organised defensively. The Blue Colts absorbed the pressure without allowing their opponents to create a clear route back into the match.
Arbash seals qualification in style:
India head coach Mahesh Gawali made a double substitution in the 72nd minute, bringing on Md Arbash and Prashan Jajo for Danny and Vishal.
Arbash made an immediate impact.
Seven minutes after coming on, the substitute completed a slick attacking move to put the game beyond doubt. Yaipharemba Chingakham initiated the move before India exchanged a series of passes to open up the Bangladesh defence.
Arbash finished emphatically, firing a powerful left-footed strike into the roof of the net to make it 3-0.
Gawali made three more changes in the closing stages, introducing Aniket Yadav, Omang Dodum and Daniyal Makakmayum as India comfortably saw out the remaining minutes.
The final whistle brought an end to a memorable night for Indian youth football, with the Blue Colts finally ending their two-decade absence from the AFC U-20 Asian Cup.
