The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has strengthened its research infrastructure in the Northeast with the inauguration of a state-of-the-art Animal House Facility at the Defence Research Laboratory (DRL), Tezpur.

Dr U. K. Singh, DS & DG (Soldier Support System), DRDO Headquarters, New Delhi, inaugurated the facility on September 3 in the presence of Dr Rajesh Kumar Garg, Centre Head, DRL Tezpur; J. Venkateswarlu, CCE (R&D) East, Kolkata; Dr P. Chattopadhyay, Scientist ‘G’, DRL Tezpur, and other laboratory personnel.

During the inauguration, Dr Y. D. Bhutia, Scientist ‘F’, DRL Tezpur, highlighted the significance of the facility and its potential to support regulated pre-clinical research and defence-oriented research and development.

Described as one of its kind in the Northeast, the facility is aimed at strengthening the region’s scientific infrastructure for controlled and ethically regulated pre-clinical research. It will house laboratory animals, including mice, rats and rabbits, under controlled conditions for approved studies involving pre-clinical screening, efficacy assessment and safety evaluation.

The research activities will be undertaken in accordance with applicable Committee for Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CCSEA) guidelines and prescribed ethical standards.

The facility is expected to significantly enhance DRL Tezpur’s ability to conduct biological evaluation of defence-oriented R&D products and technologies. It will provide researchers with a dedicated infrastructure to generate scientific evidence before promising technologies proceed towards field validation and eventual application for the Armed Forces.

The initiative is particularly relevant to the DRDO’s Soldier Support System, where research outcomes in areas such as health, nutrition, biomedical technologies and environmental challenges can have direct implications for personnel operating in demanding conditions.

    Boost to Defence-Academia Research:

The facility is also expected to emerge as a platform for greater Academia–DRDO collaboration in the Northeast. Universities, medical colleges and research institutions in the region will have opportunities, subject to statutory approvals and ethical clearances, to undertake collaborative pre-clinical research.

Potential areas of research include pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, natural products, nanomaterials, biomedical technologies and environmental health.

The initiative is aimed at narrowing the gap between academic research and technology translation by providing researchers and young scientists access to infrastructure required to generate validated scientific data. It is also expected to promote multidisciplinary research and capacity building across the region.

For the DRDO, the facility will strengthen the research-to-validation-to-field-application pipeline, enabling promising indigenous technologies to undergo systematic scientific evaluation before being considered for operational applications.

    Strategic Significance for Northeast:

The establishment of the facility assumes significance given the Northeast’s challenging terrain and environmental conditions, where defence personnel operate in diverse and demanding environments. It is expected to support research relevant to jungle warfare, soldier health, environmental stresses and operational requirements specific to the region.

By linking DRDO’s defence research ecosystem with the scientific capabilities of academic institutions across Northeast India, the facility is expected to encourage indigenous innovation and accelerate the translation of laboratory research into deployable technologies.

The new infrastructure represents another step towards strengthening defence-oriented multidisciplinary research and indigenous technology development, while contributing to the broader objective of Aatmanirbhar Bharat through enhanced domestic research and technology capabilities.
