Indian football legend I. M. Vijayan has welcomed Brazil’s upcoming visit to India for an international friendly, saying the occasion will provide a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the country’s young footballers.

The highly anticipated match, which is expected to feature Brazilian stars such as Vinícius Júnior and Raphinha, has generated considerable excitement among football fans. Vijayan believes the presence of one of the world’s most celebrated teams could also help attract greater attention to Indian football.

“The young players will play and gain experience, which is a very big thing. It will become a memory for them for the rest of their lives,” Vijayan said. “My football career ended a long time ago. Whatever I played, I played wholeheartedly. Now our players should enjoy the game.”

The former India striker also pointed to the wider economic impact of hosting a team of Brazil’s stature. He noted that bringing a world-class side to India requires significant investment, but said the willingness of fans and organisers to spend on such an event is a positive indication of the growing interest in football.

Vijayan also expressed his desire to witness the historic encounter in Kolkata from the stands. He said he would travel to the city if his schedule and other commitments allowed him to attend.

For India’s emerging players, the match could offer an invaluable learning opportunity. Sharing the pitch with some of the world’s leading footballers could help them gain confidence, understand the demands of elite-level football and accelerate their development.

With anticipation building across the country, Brazil’s visit is expected to be a landmark occasion for Indian football. Vijayan’s support has added further excitement to an event that could leave a lasting impression on both players and fans.
