East Bengal produced a sensational comeback at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Wednesday, defeating Kuwait’s Al Arabi SC 4-1 after extra time in the AFC Champions League Two preliminary-stage playoff to book their place in the continental competition.
The Red and Gold Brigade looked set for heartbreak after Al Arabi took the lead late in regulation time. However, Jay Gupta struck in the 90th minute to force extra time and completely change the complexion of the contest.
East Bengal carried their momentum into the additional 30 minutes. Mohammed Basim Rashid put the home side ahead in the 108th minute with a powerful finish, before David Hmar added a third to put East Bengal firmly in control. Rohit Danu then completed a remarkable 4-1 victory as the Kolkata giants ran riot in extra time.
The hosts had endured a tense opening 90 minutes, with both sides struggling to find the breakthrough. East Bengal goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Singh Gill also played a crucial role, making important saves to keep his side within touching distance during Al Arabi’s threatening spells.
The late equaliser from Jay Gupta proved to be the turning point. With the momentum firmly behind them, East Bengal dominated extra time and struck three times to seal one of their most memorable continental victories.
East Bengal then sealed a memorable victory with two late goals. David Lalhlansanga struck in the 117th minute before Rohit Danu added a fourth in the 121st minute to complete the 4-1 triumph.
The result sees East Bengal advance to the AFC Champions League Two group stage, marking a significant moment for the club on the Asian stage.
For Antonio Lopez Habas’ side, the comeback also provided a major boost ahead of the new season, with the team showing character and attacking quality when it mattered most.
East Bengal will now feature in the AFC Champions League Two 2026-27 group stage, with the draw scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur on August 18.
