India produced a dominant performance at the U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championships, winning a remarkable 17 medals across the men’s and women’s individual events.
The Indian contingent finished the championships with four gold, four silver and nine bronze medals, underlining the country’s growing strength and depth in fencing at the international level.
India made its presence felt across all six individual events in Sabre, Foil and Epee, with at least one Indian fencer featuring on the podium in every discipline.
The highlight of the campaign came in the Men’s Sabre, where India completed a stunning podium sweep. Nikhil Wagh won the gold medal, with Lakshay Badser taking silver, while Ashwini Arya and Laishram Moramba shared the bronze medals.
India continued its strong showing in the men’s events. In Men’s Foil, Tejas Patil secured silver and Hemash Sanasam won bronze, finishing behind England’s Oliver. In Men’s Epee, Lokesh Vemani claimed silver, while Shaurya Ashwini and Godwin Anbkess secured bronze medals alongside Nigeria’s gold medallist Thompson.
The women’s contingent also delivered a series of impressive performances. Joys Ashita won gold in Women’s Foil, with teammate Kanaglakshmi taking silver.
In Women’s Epee, Prachi Lohan secured the gold medal, while Nivedhya Nair and Anupriya added two bronze medals.
India also struck gold in Women’s Sabre, where Jeferlin topped the podium. Aakhari won silver, while Shreya Gupta claimed bronze to complete another strong showing by the Indian women.
Reacting to the team’s performance, Fencing Association of India Secretary General Rajeev Mehta congratulated the athletes, coaches, support staff and families for their contribution to the historic medal tally.
“Our objective is to continue creating more opportunities for young Indian fencers to compete at the international level and prepare them for the senior circuit and major championships,” Mehta said, adding that the performance was an important step towards building a stronger and more competitive Indian team for the future.
The impressive medal haul marks another significant milestone for Indian fencing and highlights the growing pool of young talent emerging through the country’s development pathway.
