India and Sri Lanka on Friday reviewed bilateral cooperation in the power sector and discussed ways to deepen collaboration in cross-border electricity trade, renewable energy, transmission infrastructure and capacity building.
The meeting was held in New Delhi and was led by Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs Manohar Lal from the Indian side, while Sri Lanka was represented by Anura Karunathilake, Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation and Minister of Energy.
The two sides reviewed the progress of key ongoing bilateral initiatives, including the proposed India-Sri Lanka High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) interconnection and the Sampur Solar Power Project.
The discussions also covered opportunities to expand cross-border electricity trade and strengthen cooperation in renewable energy and transmission infrastructure, with a focus on enhancing regional energy security and supporting the clean energy transition.
The Indian side shared its experience in developing transmission systems through the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) framework under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
Both sides reviewed progress under existing bilateral mechanisms and reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening cooperation in the power sector to promote sustainable development and regional energy security.
Manohar Lal reiterated India’s commitment to the long-standing India-Sri Lanka energy partnership, while Karunathilake appreciated India’s continued support and conveyed Sri Lanka’s commitment to further expanding bilateral energy cooperation.
The meeting was attended by Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal and senior officials from the Government of India. The Sri Lankan delegation included Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to India Mahishini Colonne and other senior officials.
