The 23rd Commonwealth Games officially commenced in Glasgow, Scotland, with a vibrant and spectacular opening ceremony at the OVO Hydro. King Charles III declared the Games open in the presence of Queen Camilla, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, and Commonwealth Sport President Donald Rukare. The 10-day sporting extravaganza features athletes from 74 nations competing across multiple disciplines.

India’s contingent, led by flag bearer Mirabai Chanu and ceremonial baton bearer Lovlina Borgohain, received a warm reception as they marched into the arena waving miniature Indian flags, marking the beginning of the country’s campaign.

India had already made an encouraging start before the opening ceremony. Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain secured a place in the women’s 75 kg boxing semifinals after receiving a bye due to the small draw. She will face Taafaki on 31 July for a spot in the gold medal match.

The Indian lawn bowls team also impressed on the opening day by winning both of its matches.

On the second day of competition, gymnasts Tapeshwarnath Das, Swathish KP, Tapan Mohanty, and Yogeshwar Singh will compete in the men’s team and individual events. Para swimmer RVVBK Budigina will participate in the men’s 100m freestyle S13 event, with the final scheduled later in the day. Swimmer Srihari Nataraj will also be in action in the men’s 50m backstroke heats before competing in the semifinals.

This edition of the Commonwealth Games features 10 sports, nine fewer than the Birmingham 2022 Games, with all events being held across four venues within an eight-mile radius. The programme includes athletics, swimming, 3×3 basketball, track cycling, weightlifting, lawn bowls, artistic gymnastics, netball, boxing, and judo.

India has sent a 125-member contingent, including para athletes. After winning 61 medals at the previous Commonwealth Games, the nation faces a tougher challenge this time due to the reduced number of sports and medal events.
