More than just a football team, the Army football unit represents a unique blend of military precision and sporting excellence. Every player is first a soldier, committed to serving the nation, and then an athlete striving for victory in India’s most competitive football tournaments.
I spoke to Antony Ramesh ,the Chief Coach of Indian Army Football Team.
“Yes, all our players are serving personnel of the Indian Army. Along with performing their military duties, they train and compete at a high level. Their discipline, commitment, and professionalism are among our biggest strengths.”- Ramesh said.
The IAFT has built a reputation as a breeding ground for disciplined, fearless footballers. Competing in prestigious domestic competitions, the team continues to nurture young talent while inspiring aspiring footballers across the country.
For every young recruit wearing the Army jersey, the ambition extends beyond winning trophies. It is about earning respect, representing the uniform with pride, and proving that the spirit of a soldier shines just as brightly on the football field as it does on the nation’s borders.
The team’s prospect looks brighter than ever, with a growing focus on youth development, professional training, and exposure to elite competitions.

“The Services Sports Control Board has played a vital role in Indian sports. It provides excellent infrastructure, coaching, and opportunities for athletes to develop while serving the nation. Many outstanding national and international sportspersons have emerged through this system, and we are proud to be part of it.

When I asked Bhabindra Malla Thakuri,the Captain of IAFT about the team’s prospect in upcoming Durand Cup he said with a happy heart –
“On the behalf of my teammates I just want to say that we are very excited for this game. Our preparation has been excellent so far. We still have 4 days to go, the focus is improving every day, staying sharp . The best thing of our team is that we are united.The team is working hard and we are ready to lift this trophy this time.”
On the battlefield they defend the nation.On the football ground, they defend the badge—with the same passion, courage, and pride.
