Flying Officer Debashish Roy has scripted a remarkable success story by becoming the first commissioned officer from his village in the Indian Air Force, turning years of perseverance, discipline and dedication into an achievement that has inspired his entire community.
Born into a humble farming family in rural Cooch Behar, Debashish grew up in an environment where awareness of opportunities in the Armed Forces was limited. Despite these constraints, he nurtured a clear ambition from an early age—to wear the uniform of the Indian Air Force and serve the nation.
His journey began in 2019 when, while pursuing his graduation, he joined the Indian Air Force as an Airman. The experience not only introduced him to the ethos of military service but also motivated him to aspire to the officer cadre. Balancing his operational responsibilities with academic studies, Debashish began preparing for the Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT), determined to earn a commission.
His path to becoming an officer demanded years of disciplined preparation, resilience and unwavering commitment. Throughout the journey, he received steadfast support from his wife, while fellow Air Warriors and colleagues helped him prepare for the rigorous Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) interviews.
His perseverance was rewarded when he successfully cleared the AFSB and underwent training at the Air Force Academy, Dundigal. On commissioning, he became not only the first member of his village to join the Indian Air Force but also its first-ever commissioned officer, marking a historic milestone for his community.
Speaking with pride, Debashish’s parents reflected on the journey that transformed their son from a village boy into an officer of the Indian Air Force.
His mother, Hemlata Roy, described him as an academically bright and disciplined student whose dream of joining the Indian Air Force took shape during his childhood.
“He always wanted to serve the motherland,” she said, adding that his passion, perseverance and sense of duty shaped him into the warrior he is today.
His father, Dipak Roy, recalled that Debashish was disciplined from an early age. Growing up in a village, he loved playing outdoors like any other child, but his parents ensured he was raised with strict discipline and strong values.
According to Dipak Roy, that upbringing instilled in him a deep sense of responsibility, determination and commitment, qualities that ultimately enabled him to realise his dream of becoming an officer in the Indian Air Force.
Flying Officer Debashish Roy’s journey stands as a powerful example of how determination, discipline and hard work can overcome geographical and social limitations. From the agricultural fields of rural Cooch Behar to the parade ground of the Air Force Academy, his story reflects the opportunities available to young Indians through the Armed Forces.
