In the volatile landscape of South Sudan’s Jonglei State, where communities have endured cycles of violence, displacement and humanitarian hardship, a group of United Nations peacekeepers from India has become a symbol of courage, compassion and commitment.
A total of 150 Indian peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), including 12 women peacekeepers, were awarded the prestigious United Nations Medal in recognition of their exceptional efforts to protect civilians, support humanitarian operations and maintain stability in conflict-affected areas, particularly Akobo and surrounding regions of Jonglei State.
The medals were presented by UNMISS Force Commander Major-General Junhui Wu during a special commemoration ceremony, honouring the dedication of personnel who continued their mission under some of the most challenging circumstances faced by peacekeepers today.
A Mission in the Midst of Crisis:
For communities in Jonglei, daily life has often been shaped by insecurity. Armed confrontations, limited access to essential services and difficult terrain have created enormous challenges for civilians and humanitarian agencies alike.
In Akobo, one of the remote areas where the Indian contingent has been deployed, peacekeepers have operated in an environment marked by uncertainty and isolation. Roads are frequently impassable, communication networks are limited and humanitarian access can be severely restricted.
Despite these obstacles, the Indian peacekeepers remained present — patrolling vulnerable areas, engaging with local communities, protecting civilians and helping create conditions where humanitarian assistance could reach those most in need.
“As civilians were caught in the crossfire of armed confrontations and amidst severe logistical constraints and prolonged isolation, you remained steadfast in fulfilling your mandate to serve and support people in need,” Major-General Junhui Wu told the peacekeepers during the ceremony.
His words reflected the reality of their deployment: a mission where courage was measured not only by confronting threats but also by the patience, discipline and humanity required to stand with civilians during moments of extreme vulnerability.
Protecting People Beyond the Battlefield:
UN peacekeeping is not only about preventing conflict escalation; it is also about protecting human lives and preserving hope in communities affected by violence.
Indian peacekeepers in Jonglei have worked closely with local populations, community leaders and humanitarian partners.
