India’s enduring commitment to international peace and security received global recognition as 651 Indian Army personnel serving under the United Nations were awarded the United Nations Medal during a ceremonial Medal Parade at the Permanent Operating Base Sake in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
The prestigious honour recognises the professionalism, courage, and unwavering dedication displayed by Indian peacekeepers serving under the United Nations flag in one of the world’s most challenging conflict zones. The medal parade celebrated the contingent’s outstanding contribution to maintaining peace, protecting civilians, and supporting stability efforts in eastern DRC.
India remains one of the largest and most respected contributors to United Nations Peacekeeping Operations. For decades, Indian troops have earned an international reputation for carrying out difficult missions with discipline, impartiality, and humanitarian commitment, often operating under hostile conditions to safeguard vulnerable communities.
The latest recognition adds another chapter to India’s distinguished peacekeeping legacy. Indian soldiers deployed in the DRC have played a critical role in securing volatile regions, assisting local populations, facilitating humanitarian operations, and supporting the implementation of the UN’s peace mandate despite persistent security threats posed by armed groups.
The award of the United Nations Medal underscores the international community’s appreciation for the Indian contingent’s exceptional service and operational excellence. It also reflects the trust placed in the Indian Army’s professionalism and its ability to deliver under some of the most demanding peacekeeping environments in the world.
India has contributed more than 290,000 peacekeepers to over 50 UN missions since its first deployment in 1950, with hundreds of Indian personnel making the supreme sacrifice in the cause of global peace. Today, Indian peacekeepers continue to serve across multiple UN missions, carrying forward a tradition built on courage, integrity, and selfless service.
As global conflicts become increasingly complex, the recognition of 651 Indian soldiers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo stands as a testament to India’s unwavering commitment to the ideals of the United Nations and its enduring role as a responsible stakeholder in international peace and security.
