India and Japan have reaffirmed their Special Strategic and Global Partnership by unveiling a comprehensive roadmap to expand cooperation in Artificial Intelligence (AI), advanced technologies, economic security and regional resilience.
In a joint statement issued following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae, the two leaders described AI as an era-defining technology that will shape the future of economies, governance, industry and global security. They agreed to strengthen bilateral collaboration to build a safe, secure, trustworthy and human-centric AI ecosystem while enhancing innovation and economic competitiveness.
Both countries will deepen cooperation in AI governance, cybersecurity, trusted digital infrastructure, semiconductor supply chains, frontier AI research and multilingual AI models. They also committed to closer coordination in international forums, including the G20, OECD, GPAI and the United Nations, to promote responsible AI development and global standards.
Building on the Japan-India AI Cooperation Initiative (JAI) and the first India-Japan AI Strategic Dialogue held in April 2026, the two sides agreed to expand partnerships among governments, industry and academia. Several new agreements were announced to support joint development of large language models (LLMs), AI research, innovation across the technology stack and collaboration between AI startups and research institutions.
Recognising India’s growing pool of AI talent, Japan reaffirmed its commitment to welcome 500 highly skilled Indian AI professionals by 2030 while promoting joint research, industrial collaboration and greater mobility of technology professionals.
Beyond AI, India and Japan reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in defence, emerging technologies, economic security and resilient supply chains. The two leaders stressed the importance of maintaining a free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific and enhancing strategic stability through closer collaboration between like-minded partners.
The leaders also endorsed the vision of “AI for All”, committing to develop inclusive, secure and sustainable AI solutions for the Indo-Pacific and the Global South through capacity building, knowledge sharing and public-private partnerships. Prime Minister Modi welcomed Japan’s announcement to host a future AI Summit, describing it as another step towards strengthening bilateral cooperation in emerging technologies and regional innovation.
