Operation Amistad: India Stands with Venezuela

New Delhi/Caracas: Reinforcing its commitment to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), India has significantly expanded its relief operations in earthquake-affected Venezuela under Operation Amistad, delivering critical medical aid and emergency support to communities devastated by the disaster.

The latest phase of the operation underscores India’s growing role as a responsible first responder and trusted humanitarian partner, extending assistance beyond its immediate neighbourhood to nations facing natural calamities. The initiative reflects New Delhi’s longstanding philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (The World is One Family), translating diplomatic goodwill into tangible relief on the ground.

According to the Embassy of India in Caracas, Operation Amistad has intensified its disaster relief efforts with a renewed emphasis on providing a “healing touch” to those affected by the powerful earthquake. The mission now includes enhanced medical outreach, emergency healthcare services, and humanitarian support aimed at addressing the urgent needs of displaced and injured civilians.

Indian medical teams and relief personnel are working alongside Venezuelan authorities and local emergency responders to deliver essential healthcare services, trauma care, medicines, and emergency supplies. The assistance is expected to strengthen local response capabilities while supporting ongoing rescue and recovery efforts in affected regions.

The operation builds upon India’s globally recognised expertise in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), a domain in which the country has repeatedly demonstrated rapid deployment capabilities. Over the past decade, India has successfully conducted numerous large-scale relief missions, including Operation Maitri in Nepal following the 2015 earthquake, Operation Dost in Türkiye and Syria after the devastating 2023 earthquakes, and multiple evacuation and humanitarian missions across Asia, Africa, and the Indian Ocean Region.

Defence analysts note that such humanitarian deployments have become an integral component of India’s foreign policy and strategic engagement, complementing its expanding diplomatic outreach. By deploying medical expertise, relief supplies, and emergency assistance, India not only addresses immediate humanitarian needs but also strengthens bilateral relations and reinforces its image as a reliable development and security partner.

Operation Amistad also highlights the increasing synergy between India’s diplomatic missions, humanitarian agencies, and disaster response institutions. The coordinated effort demonstrates the country’s ability to mobilise resources swiftly in support of international relief operations while adhering to the principles of humanity, neutrality, and cooperation.

As rescue and rehabilitation efforts continue across earthquake-affected areas of Venezuela, India’s sustained humanitarian presence is expected to provide vital support during the critical recovery phase. The expanded mission reaffirms New Delhi’s commitment to standing with partner nations during times of crisis and further cements its reputation as a credible global provider of humanitarian assistance and emergency relief.
