In a significant milestone for India’s maritime security modernisation programme, the keel-laying ceremony of the fourth Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) being constructed for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) was held at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai today.

The event marks another crucial step in the Indian Coast Guard’s ongoing force expansion efforts aimed at enhancing coastal surveillance, maritime law enforcement, search and rescue operations, and the protection of India’s vast maritime interests.

Being built under a contract for six NGOPVs signed on December 20, 2023, the new class of vessels represents the next generation of indigenous offshore patrol platforms designed to meet evolving security challenges across the Indian Ocean Region.

Developed, designed, and constructed entirely within the country by MDL, the vessels embody the Government’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, reinforcing India’s growing capability to build sophisticated maritime assets through indigenous expertise and domestic industrial capacity.

Senior officials from the Indian Coast Guard and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited attended the ceremony, highlighting the close collaboration between the operational user and the shipbuilding industry in delivering critical maritime capabilities.

    Enhancing Maritime Vigilance:

Equipped with modern propulsion systems, advanced sensors, and state-of-the-art mission equipment, the NGOPVs are expected to significantly enhance the Coast Guard’s operational reach and endurance across India’s maritime zones. The vessels will play a vital role in coastal security, anti-smuggling operations, fisheries protection, environmental response, and humanitarian assistance missions.

As maritime threats continue to evolve, the induction of these platforms will provide the Indian Coast Guard with enhanced capability to maintain persistent surveillance and rapid response across the nation’s extensive coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

    Strategic Significance:

The NGOPV programme reflects India’s broader objective of strengthening maritime domain awareness and securing critical sea lanes in an increasingly contested regional security environment.

The successful progression of the project also underscores the growing maturity of India’s indigenous shipbuilding ecosystem, with domestic shipyards increasingly delivering complex naval and coast guard platforms that contribute directly to national security and strategic autonomy.

With the keel of the fourth vessel now laid, the programme moves steadily forward toward delivering a new generation of patrol assets that will serve as key force multipliers for the Indian Coast Guard in safeguarding the nation’s maritime frontiers.

As India continues to expand its maritime footprint and strategic interests across the Indo-Pacific, the NGOPV fleet will form an important pillar of the country’s coastal defence architecture and maritime security framework for decades to come.
