Asian Championships silver medalist Harmilan Bains was forced to settle for second place in the women’s 5000m race as Maharashtra’s Sanjivani Baburao Jadhav produced a commanding performance to claim gold at the Indian Athletics Series No. 11.

Competing as one of the marquee names of the meet, Harmilan entered the event carrying the weight of expectations following her recent success on the continental stage. However, Sanjivani delivered a composed and tactically astute race, crossing the finish line in 16:47.16 to secure the top spot and one of the standout victories of the competition.

While Harmilan’s silver medal remained a significant achievement, the day ultimately belonged to the host state’s athletes, with West Bengal producing an exceptional all-round performance across track and field events.
Bengal emerged as the dominant force of the meet, collecting an impressive eight gold medals and underlining the state’s growing stature in Indian athletics. Athletes from the state showcased both depth and quality, delivering strong performances across multiple disciplines and age categories.

The medal haul reflected the sustained development of athletics in West Bengal, where investments in grassroots programmes, coaching infrastructure and athlete development continue to yield results on the national stage. The state’s success was evident not only in podium finishes but also in the consistency displayed by its athletes throughout the competition.

The Indian Athletics Series has become an important component of the domestic athletics calendar, providing elite competitors and emerging talents with valuable opportunities to test themselves in a highly competitive environment. For athletes preparing for upcoming national championships and international assignments, the series serves as a crucial platform for performance assessment and qualification.

As the competition progresses, performances such as Sanjivani Jadhav’s decisive victory and Bengal’s commanding medal-winning display reinforce the increasing competitiveness of Indian athletics. With established stars and rising talents continuing to push standards higher, the future of the sport in the country appears increasingly promising.
