The Indian Navy has successfully concluded a high-risk Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) operation involving the recovery of an unexploded missile warhead from the crude oil tanker MT Olympic Life, demonstrating its advanced maritime response capabilities and commitment to ensuring regional maritime safety.

The Marshall Islands-flagged vessel, carrying no Indian nationals onboard, was en route from Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, to Kochi when it reported an explosion in its hull while operating off the coast of Oman on 26 May 2026. Subsequent assessments by the vessel’s crew indicated the presence of unexploded ordnance onboard as the tanker continued its transit towards the Indian coast.

Following the receipt of information through the Information Fusion Centre–Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR), the Indian Navy initiated a coordinated response. A specialist EOD team from the Southern Naval Command in Kochi was deployed to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the threat.

Detailed inspections revealed that a projectile had penetrated the vessel’s hull, passed through multiple structural compartments, and become lodged inside a fuel storage tank, posing a significant safety hazard. Given the presence of an unexploded missile warhead within a highly sensitive environment containing flammable fuel, the operation demanded meticulous planning and execution.

The EOD team adopted a phased and methodical approach, implementing stringent safety protocols to safeguard the vessel, its crew, and nearby port infrastructure. Utilizing advanced diagnostic and technical procedures, the specialists successfully identified and neutralized the detonation mechanism before safely extracting the warhead and associated debris.
The recovered ordnance has since been transported to a secure facility for detailed forensic examination and safe storage.

The operation highlights the Indian Navy’s expertise in explosive ordnance disposal, technical proficiency in managing complex maritime emergencies, and ability to coordinate effectively with multiple agencies in high-risk scenarios. It also underscores the Navy’s role as a responsible maritime force capable of responding swiftly to emergencies at sea, irrespective of the nationality of the vessel or its crew.

By ensuring the safe recovery of the unexploded warhead and mitigating a potentially serious maritime hazard, the Indian Navy has once again demonstrated its status as a trusted security partner in the Indian Ocean Region and a key contributor to regional maritime stability and safety.
