Leh, Ladakh: In a tribute to the valour, sacrifice and indomitable spirit of India’s soldiers, the Indian Army today flagged off a prestigious High Altitude Cycling Expedition from the historic Rezang La War Memorial in Ladakh as part of the commemorative events leading up to the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas.
The expedition will cover approximately 550 kilometres across the challenging terrain of Ladakh before culminating at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras. Traversing some of the world’s highest mountain passes, ranging from 9,000 to 18,000 feet above sea level, the cyclists will face steep ascents, extreme weather conditions, low-oxygen environments and rugged mountain landscapes, testing their endurance, resilience and determination.
The expedition team comprises highly motivated civilians from Leh and Kargil districts alongside trained Army personnel, reflecting the Indian Army’s enduring ethos of adventure, perseverance and nation-building. The ride symbolically connects two iconic war memorials that stand as enduring reminders of the courage and sacrifice of India’s bravehearts.
The journey commenced from the Rezang La War Memorial, which honours the legendary heroes of the 1962 Battle of Rezang La, and will conclude at the Kargil War Memorial, Dras, dedicated to the soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice during the 1999 Kargil War.
The expedition serves as a moving tribute to the nation’s military legacy and the unwavering commitment of its Armed Forces in safeguarding India’s sovereignty.
Throughout the expedition, participants will engage with local communities, students, ex-servicemen and youth through a series of interactive sessions and outreach programmes. These engagements are aimed at fostering patriotism, strengthening national integration and creating greater awareness about the sacrifices made by the Armed Forces in service of the nation.
