Reinforcing its unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and climate action, the Indian Army’s Eastern Command marked World Environment Day 2026 with a series of impactful green initiatives across its areas of responsibility, transforming commitment into meaningful action.
With the belief that every sapling strengthens the local ecosystem, community resilience and our shared commitment to climate action, Eastern Command spearheaded a wide range of environmental activities at military stations and civilian locations alike. Tree plantation drives, cleanliness campaigns, waste management initiatives and climate awareness programmes brought together soldiers, families, students, NCC cadets, veterans and local communities in a collective mission to protect and preserve nature.
Demonstrating the Army’s dedication towards building a greener and more sustainable future, troops of Spear Corps and Assam Rifles formations, under the aegis of Eastern Command, joined hands with NCC cadets, students and local residents to conduct extensive tree plantation drives at Tinkopani and Mariani in Assam. The initiative reinforced the shared resolve to combat climate change and nurture a healthier environment for future generations.
Further strengthening this commitment, Brahmastra Corps organised a tree plantation drive during the Cockerel Summer Camp 2026 at Ranchi. The event also featured an engaging bird-watching session led by renowned naturalist Mr Panna Lal Mahato, popularly known as the “Bird Man of Jharkhand”. His insightful interaction inspired participants to appreciate and safeguard the rich biodiversity of the region.
Across Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal, Trinity Area undertook a series of impactful environmental initiatives under the aegis of Eastern Command. Led by Lt Gen Pawan Chadha, General Officer Commanding, Trinity Area, these efforts included tree plantation drives, rejuvenation of water bodies, sustainable waste management projects, composting, smart metering, car-pooling initiatives and awareness campaigns. The activities reflected a collective commitment towards environmental conservation and a climate-conscious India.
In Kolkata, World Environment Day celebrations witnessed enthusiastic participation at Ballygunge, Barrackpore and Vijay Durg Military Stations. Tree plantation drives, waste management activities and Clean & Green campaigns saw soldiers, families, students, teachers, civil defence employees and staff joining hands to promote environmental responsibility and sustainable living.
Adding significance to the occasion, Lt Gen VMB Krishnan, Army Commander Eastern Command, recently visited Ballygunge Military Station and interacted with troops. He commended their high morale, operational readiness and professional competence, while encouraging all ranks to continue upholding the highest standards of military professionalism alongside their commitment to nation-building initiatives.
Through these wide-ranging environmental efforts, Eastern Command once again demonstrated that safeguarding the nation’s future extends beyond borders and battlefields. Every tree planted, every space cleaned and every individual inspired represents a decisive step towards a cleaner, greener and more sustainable tomorrow.
