Eastern Railway has significantly expanded its infrastructure aimed at improving railway safety and easing road traffic movement by replacing level crossings with Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and Road Under Bridges (RUBs) across its network.
The initiative is part of the railway’s ongoing efforts to eliminate risks associated with level crossings, reduce traffic congestion, and ensure uninterrupted movement of both trains and road users. By constructing ROBs and RUBs, Eastern Railway seeks to enhance public safety while improving connectivity in urban and rural areas.
Under the leadership of Shri Milind Deouskar, General Manager, Eastern Railway, the zone has undertaken an extensive programme to identify and address vulnerable level crossings through the development of grade-separated infrastructure.
According to railway officials, Eastern Railway has commissioned or facilitated the construction of a total of 579 Road Under Bridges and 207 Road Over Bridges across its four divisions. The Howrah Division leads the network with 244 RUBs and 53 ROBs, followed by the Sealdah Division with 119 RUBs and 37 ROBs. The Malda Division has developed 112 RUBs and 50 ROBs, while the Asansol Division has constructed 104 RUBs and 67 ROBs.
The railway administration stated that these projects have played a crucial role in reducing accident risks, eliminating traffic bottlenecks, and ensuring smoother movement for commuters, emergency vehicles, and local residents. The infrastructure upgrades are also expected to improve operational efficiency by allowing trains to run without interruptions caused by level crossing closures.
Highlighting the significance of the initiative, Shri Shibram Majhi, Chief Public Relations Officer, Eastern Railway, said that every ROB and RUB represents the railway’s commitment to public safety and convenience. He noted that the objective is not merely to create infrastructure but to provide safer and more reliable transportation for citizens. He further stated that under the guidance of the General Manager, Eastern Railway remains committed to creating an accident-free network while ensuring that travel by both road and rail is safer, faster, and more comfortable.
Eastern Railway officials said the continued expansion of ROBs and RUBs reflects the organisation’s focus on modernising infrastructure and strengthening safety measures across its network.
