Tensions have intensified along several stretches of the India-Bangladesh Border in West Bengal as authorities accelerate the construction of border fencing aimed at curbing infiltration, smuggling, human trafficking, and other cross-border crimes.
Reports from Border areas ranging from Phansidewa in North Bengal to Changrabandha in Cooch Behar indicate growing friction surrounding the ongoing fencing work. According to security sources, groups allegedly comprising smugglers and anti-social elements have attempted to obstruct construction activities in some sectors. Incidents of stone-pelting targeting personnel engaged in fencing operations have also been reported.
Border Security Force (BSF) officials stated that despite repeated provocations, personnel exercised restraint and continued operations without resorting to the use of firearms. Several BSF jawans reportedly sustained injuries during stone-pelting incidents, particularly in the Phansidewa sector of the Siliguri subdivision.
Authorities have simultaneously intensified efforts to secure vulnerable stretches of the International Border. Administrative officials noted that of the nearly 4,000-kilometre India-Bangladesh border, approximately 2,200 kilometres lie along West Bengal. Around 1,600 kilometres have already been fenced, while nearly 600 kilometres remain unfenced.
Following recent administrative approvals, the West Bengal government has handed over 27 kilometres of land to the BSF in the first phase of the project. Officials said 18 kilometres will be used for fencing, while the remaining nine kilometres will be developed for BSF outposts and related infrastructure.
However, fencing activities have reportedly faced objections in certain areas from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) over issues related to land measurement and Border protocols. The disagreements have contributed to renewed tensions in some sectors along the frontier.
Similar disputes over fencing projects have occurred in the past in Border regions such as Chapainawabganj and Lalmonirhat, where BSF and BGB personnel were involved in stand-offs regarding border infrastructure work.
In Cooch Behar district’s Mekhliganj block, officials from the Land and Land Reforms Department stated that approximately 105 acres of land would be required to complete fencing along remaining unfenced stretches. Nearly 80 acres of the required land reportedly fall within the Dahagram-Angarpota enclave area. Authorities alleged that objections raised during land survey activities led to temporary tensions, although fencing-related work continued under security supervision.
Residents living near the border have largely welcomed the fencing initiative, expressing hope that it will help reduce illegal infiltration, cross-border smuggling, counterfeit currency circulation, and other criminal activities. Many have called for the project to be completed at the earliest.
The issue has also sparked political debate. Opposition leaders have argued that border security projects faced delays in the past due to administrative hurdles and have called for stronger infrastructure to address infiltration, trafficking networks, and other security concerns.
Security experts say the India-Bangladesh Border in West Bengal has emerged as one of India’s most sensitive frontier regions, making enhanced surveillance, infrastructure development, and coordinated border management increasingly important for maintaining security and stability.
The Border Security Force (BSF) plays a vital role in safeguarding the India-Bangladesh Border in West Bengal, one of the country’s most sensitive frontiers. BSF personnel conduct round-the-clock surveillance, prevent illegal infiltration, curb smuggling activities, and combat human trafficking networks. Through Border fencing, patrol operations, and advanced monitoring systems, the force strengthens national security and maintains border stability. The BSF also co-ordinates with local authorities and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to address cross-border challenges and ensure peace in border areas.
