Demonstrating exemplary discipline, courage and an unwavering spirit of public service, more than 8,000 cadets of the National Cadet Corps (NCC), West Bengal and Sikkim Directorate, rendered dedicated voluntary service during the six days of Durga Puja celebrations across West Bengal, assisting the local police and civil administration in ensuring the safety, convenience and orderly movement of millions of devotees and visitors.
Despite the unfortunate incident at the Chorbagaan Durga Puja pandal, the NCC cadets demonstrated remarkable resilience and a strong sense of civic responsibility. Remaining steadfast in their commitment to public service, they continued to report for their assigned duties and extended wholehearted support to the administration during a challenging period.

Deployed at Durga Puja pandals across the state, the cadets played a crucial role in crowd management, regulating the movement of visitors, facilitating the smooth conduct of festivities and assisting elderly citizens and other members of the public. Their alertness, disciplined conduct and readiness to serve strengthened the efforts of the police and civil administration in managing the massive public turnout during one of West Bengal’s largest annual festivals.
NCC Cadets Epitomise ‘Unity and Discipline’:
The cadets’ contribution reflected the core values of the NCC—discipline, leadership, selfless service and commitment to the nation. Their performance during the festivities highlighted the vital role of young citizens in community service, particularly when public safety and effective coordination become paramount.
Recognising their exemplary contribution, Maj Gen APS Chahal, SM, Additional Director General (ADG), NCC West Bengal and Sikkim Directorate, appreciated the dedication, discipline and sense of responsibility demonstrated by the cadets.
At a ceremony held at the NCC Directorate in New Alipore, Kolkata, the ADG commended the cadets for standing by the police and civil administration and continuing their duties in the aftermath of the unfortunate incident. He underscored their commitment to public safety, convenience and welfare, describing their contribution as a reflection of the NCC’s enduring ethos of service and solidarity.
He also acknowledged the collective efforts of Associate NCC Officers (ANOs), Permanent Instructors and Group Headquarters in ensuring effective coordination and the successful execution of assigned responsibilities throughout the Durga Puja period.

Focus on Strengthening NCC in West Bengal:
During the interaction, Maj Gen Chahal highlighted the ongoing efforts to strengthen the NCC’s presence and capabilities across West Bengal. He stated that the Directorate had been actively engaging with the state government to secure the requisite support in terms of budgetary allocations, manpower, infrastructure and incentives for the organisation.
The ADG also appreciated the positive approach and vision of the new West Bengal government towards expanding NCC coverage to all institutions across the state. Reaffirming the Directorate’s commitment to youth development, he emphasised the importance of nurturing disciplined, responsible and service-oriented citizens who can contribute meaningfully to society and nation-building.
The NCC’s extensive deployment during Durga Puja once again demonstrated how disciplined youth participation can complement the efforts of civil authorities during large public gatherings. The selfless service rendered by thousands of cadets not only brought recognition to the organisation but also reinforced the NCC’s role in fostering leadership, civic responsibility and national unity.

Through their actions, the young cadets upheld the NCC motto of ‘Unity and Discipline’, demonstrating that the spirit of service to the nation extends beyond military training to meaningful contributions to the safety and well-being of the community.
