The much-anticipated multi-district riverine sailing expedition, “Hooghly Sankalp – MENU 2026,” from Farakka to Kolkata was ceremoniously flagged off today at the Lockgate Jetty, Farakka, marking the beginning of an inspiring 20-day journey of adventure, leadership, environmental stewardship and community engagement.
Major General APS Chahal, SM, Additional Director General, West Bengal & Sikkim NCC Directorate, flagged off the expedition, comprising Naval NCC cadets from West Bengal and Sikkim. The event was attended by distinguished guests, civil and military dignitaries, senior representatives of the district administration, and partner agencies.
Addressing the gathering, Major General APS Chahal highlighted that the expedition is far more than a conventional sailing journey. Describing it as a “floating classroom,” he said the expedition will provide the 60 selected cadets with an opportunity to develop maritime skills, strengthen character, and cultivate leadership, teamwork and resilience.
Over the next 20 days, the young sailors, comprising both boys and girls, will navigate approximately 410 kilometres along the Hooghly River from Farakka to Kolkata, with halts at seven key locations. During the expedition, the cadets will also undertake a range of community development and social outreach initiatives, further reinforcing the NCC’s commitment to youth development and service to society.
Demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental conservation, 150 saplings were planted during the flag-off ceremony under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative. The green initiative was undertaken in collaboration with Shri Sanjay Jaisingh, Founder of Mithri Mitti Trust, adding an important environmental dimension to the expedition.
Extending his best wishes to the sailing team, Major General APS Chahal commended the naval NCC units for their exceptional coordination, meticulous planning and commitment in organising the expedition.
The flag-off of “Hooghly Sankalp – MENU 2026” marks the commencement of a unique riverine voyage that brings together youth empowerment, maritime training, environmental conservation, community outreach and national integration.
The expedition is expected to provide the participating cadets with a challenging and enriching experience while fostering a spirit of adventure, discipline, leadership and service.
