A 22-member team from the Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering & Winter Sports (JIM & WS), Pahalgam, has successfully completed a mountaineering expedition to the Khyam Tso Massif in the Rumtse Phu region of Ladakh, scaling multiple peaks despite extreme weather conditions.
The expedition, led by Col Hem Chandra Singh, was flagged off on June 26, 2026. After following a structured acclimatisation schedule in the Ladakh region, the team first summited Peak Pt 5901M on July 2 under challenging weather conditions.
In a first for the region, Col Singh also launched a paragliding flight from an altitude of 5,600 metres from the same peak.
The expedition team went on to scale another technically challenging 6,090-metre peak in the massif and Peak Pt 5944M on July 3, overcoming difficult terrain and adverse weather.
The final objective, Mt Khyam-III (6,018 metres), was successfully summited on July 5, after which the team safely descended to the roadhead camp, completing the expedition.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the expedition highlights the team’s endurance, technical capability and teamwork, while reinforcing India’s presence in the largely unexplored mountain ranges of the Ladakh region.
