Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the transfer of technology for all conventional missile systems developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to the Indian defence industry, in a major push to strengthen indigenous defence manufacturing.
The Ministry of Defence said the move is aimed at advancing the government’s Aatmanirbharta in Defence initiative by enabling Indian companies to manufacture DRDO-developed missile systems domestically, subject to applicable qualifications, certifications and regulatory requirements.
The Transfer of Technology (ToT) is expected to help bridge the gap between missile-system development and large-scale industrial production. It will also expand the role of domestic industry in manufacturing advanced defence systems.
According to the Ministry, the initiative will strengthen India’s defence industrial base by creating greater opportunities for Indian companies, including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), to participate in missile-system production and associated supply chains.
The move is also expected to increase domestic value addition, reduce dependence on imported defence equipment and enhance the country’s overall defence manufacturing capabilities.
DRDO to support technology absorption:
Under the initiative, DRDO will continue to work closely with Indian industry to facilitate the transfer and absorption of advanced missile technologies.
The ministry said the effort will enable industry partners to build the capabilities required for indigenous production while supporting the development of a broader domestic ecosystem for advanced defence technologies.
The transfer of missile technologies is being viewed as an important step in strengthening the link between defence research, industrial production and operational requirements.
The government has been placing increasing emphasis on domestic defence production as part of its wider self-reliance strategy, with the objective of building a stronger industrial base and reducing India’s reliance on overseas suppliers.
The latest decision is expected to provide further opportunities for Indian defence manufacturers and technology partners to contribute to the production of advanced missile systems for the country’s armed forces.
