Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday said modernisation of the armed forces, backed by a self-reliant and future-ready defence sector, remains a top priority of the government.
Addressing soldiers on the eve of the 80th Independence Day, Singh highlighted the transformation of India’s defence sector over the past 12 years under initiatives such as Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India. He said India has emerged as a major defence manufacturing hub and a net defence exporter while strengthening its ability to meet its own security requirements.
Domestic defence production has increased nearly four-fold, from ₹46,000 crore in 2014 to a record ₹1.78 lakh crore in 2025-26. Defence exports have also risen sharply from ₹686 crore in 2013-14 to ₹38,424 crore in 2025-26, with Indian defence products now reaching more than 80 countries.
Singh said the government is accelerating military modernisation through higher defence spending, increased capital expenditure and greater investment in research and development. He noted that the Defence Acquisition Council has accorded Acceptance of Necessity to projects worth more than ₹8.75 lakh crore over the past year.
Highlighting recent indigenous defence developments, the Defence Minister said advances in missile systems, air defence, hypersonic technology and other military platforms are strengthening India’s capabilities and preparing the armed forces for future warfare.
He also stressed the importance of border infrastructure, welfare measures for serving and retired personnel and greater participation of women in the armed forces. Singh praised the armed forces for their role in safeguarding the nation and as first responders during natural disasters.
Referring to the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram being observed in 2026, Singh called upon citizens to strengthen the spirit of patriotism and contribute towards nation-building and the goal of a Viksit Bharat.
