Director General of the Assam Rifles, Lieutenant General Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, visited the Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) on Thursday to commemorate the formation’s 15th Raising Day and lauded its contributions to national security and internal stability.
Headquarters IGAR (East) was raised on July 23, 2012, at Laitumkhrah, Shillong. Over the past 14 years, the formation has established itself as a key operational arm of the Assam Rifles, earning recognition for its professionalism in addressing internal security challenges, conducting disaster relief operations, spearheading anti-narcotics missions, and safeguarding India’s international borders.
During the visit, the Director General was briefed by Major General I.S. Bhinder, Inspector General, Assam Rifles (East), on the formation’s operational preparedness, administrative functioning and ongoing initiatives. The briefing highlighted the unit’s role in maintaining security and stability across its area of responsibility while supporting civil authorities whenever required.
Addressing officers and troops during a Sainik Sammelan, Lt Gen Lakhera congratulated all ranks for their dedication, discipline and exemplary service. He commended the formation for maintaining a high level of operational readiness and for consistently performing its assigned tasks with professionalism and commitment.
The Director General also emphasised the Assam Rifles’ crucial role in ensuring peace and security in the Northeast, particularly in counter-insurgency operations, border management, humanitarian assistance and anti-smuggling efforts. He encouraged personnel to continue upholding the force’s rich traditions while adapting to emerging security challenges.
As part of the celebrations, Lt Gen Lakhera presented DG Assam Rifles Commendation Cards to selected personnel in recognition of their outstanding service and exceptional contributions to the organisation. The awards acknowledged individual excellence, dedication to duty and commitment to the operational objectives of the Assam Rifles.
The visit underscored the leadership’s appreciation for the achievements of HQ IGAR (East) and reaffirmed the Assam Rifles’ commitment to maintaining operational excellence, strengthening border security and contributing to peace and stability in the Northeastern region.
