The Indian Army has intensified its humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations in flood-ravaged Upper Assam under Operation Jal Rahat, rescuing more than 200 stranded civilians from inundated areas.

Acting on the requisition of the civil administration, four Flood Relief Columns of the Red Shield Division, under the aegis of Spear Corps, were deployed on 20 July 2026 to the flood-affected districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat to undertake rescue, evacuation and relief operations.

The relief columns are operating from Nazira and Amguri in Sivasagar district, Sonari in Charaideo district, and Jorhat, supported by additional troops from formations under Spear Corps. Equipped with rescue boats, engineering resources, medical teams and essential relief stores, the Army has been carrying out round-the-clock operations to evacuate stranded civilians, including women, children and the elderly, while providing emergency medical assistance and relief to affected families.

To enhance situational awareness and optimise relief efforts, helicopter reconnaissance sorties and drone surveillance are being conducted over the flood-hit areas to assess the extent of inundation and facilitate the timely deployment of resources. Army engineer detachments are also assisting in restoring connectivity in areas where roads and infrastructure have been damaged by the floods.

The ongoing operations are being carried out in close co-ordination with the district administrations of Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat, along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and other civil agencies. Additional relief resources have been kept on standby for immediate deployment as the flood situation continues to evolve.

Reaffirming its commitment to the people of Assam, the Indian Army continues to work alongside the civil administration to ensure timely rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts for those affected by the ongoing floods.
