The Indian Navy is set to commission INS Mahendragiri (F38), the sixth indigenous stealth frigate under Project 17A, at Visakhapatnam on 11 July 2026, marking another major milestone in India’s indigenous warship construction programme.
Named after the Mahendragiri mountain range in the Eastern Ghats, the warship symbolises strength, resilience and steadfast resolve. As the first Indian Naval vessel to bear the name, INS Mahendragiri establishes a unique identity while carrying forward the Navy’s proud maritime tradition.
Designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai, the frigate reflects India’s expanding capability in the indigenous design and construction of advanced frontline combatants.
Built with over 75 per cent indigenous content, INS Mahendragiri is a significant outcome of the Government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The project has involved an extensive network of Indian industries, including numerous MSMEs, strengthening the domestic defence industrial ecosystem while generating skilled employment.
The frigate incorporates advanced stealth technologies, enhanced survivability features, reduced radar cross-section and a high degree of platform automation. Powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, the vessel is capable of sustained high-speed operations and extended deployments across the full spectrum of maritime missions.
INS Mahendragiri is equipped with an advanced suite of indigenous and state-of-the-art weapon systems and sensors, including surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, modern electronic warfare systems, comprehensive anti-submarine warfare capabilities and an integrated Combat Management System. The platform is designed to execute anti-air, anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare operations, while also supporting maritime security, power projection, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), Search and Rescue (SAR) and sustained maritime presence missions.
The commissioning of INS Mahendragiri further advances the successful induction of the Project 17A class of stealth frigates, significantly enhancing the Indian Navy’s operational capability and reaffirming India’s growing stature as a leading indigenous warship-building nation.
As India strengthens its role as the Preferred Security Partner in the Indian Ocean Region, INS Mahendragiri will serve as a potent force multiplier, safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests and contributing to a secure, stable and rules-based Indo-Pacific.
