In a significant demonstration of its commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of India’s border communities, the Indian Army’s Spearhead Division of Spear Corps facilitated the pilgrimage of residents from Gelling—the First Village of India—along with devotees from Norbuling and Tuting to the sacred Chorten at Kepang La Pass under the Ministry of Defence’s flagship initiative, Rann Bhoomi Darshan.

The visit coincided with the observance of the Universal Smoke Prayer Day, a century-old Buddhist tradition during which devotees offer ceremonial incense and smoke, praying for peace, prosperity, protection, and harmony for all living beings. The Indian Army ensured comprehensive logistical support, security, and coordination, enabling the pilgrims to participate in the sacred rituals with dignity and devotion.

Set against the backdrop of the majestic Himalayas and fluttering prayer flags, the ceremony reflected the enduring spiritual traditions of the region while reinforcing the shared bond between the Indian Army and the frontier communities it serves.

As part of the Rann Bhoomi Darshan programme, the pilgrims also visited the Siang Shaurya Sthal, where they paid homage to the brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice during the 1962 Indo-China War. The visit served as a poignant reminder of the courage and dedication of India’s armed forces and fostered a deeper sense of patriotism and national pride among the participants.

The visitors were subsequently taken to the state-of-the-art Audio-Visual Room, where they viewed an immersive presentation highlighting the historical significance of Kepang La and the events of the 1962 conflict. The experience provided valuable insight into the region’s strategic importance and the legacy of the soldiers who defended India’s frontiers.

The delegation also explored the Souvenir Shop, which showcases locally inspired artefacts and memorabilia celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the border region. The visit concluded at the newly established Kepang La Café, where the participants enjoyed traditional refreshments and local cuisine. The facility has emerged as a welcoming space for visitors while contributing to tourism promotion and local economic development in the remote frontier region.

For many of the pilgrims, the visit marked their first opportunity to return to the revered Chorten and experience the historical and cultural landmarks of Kepang La. The initiative strengthened their emotional connection with the nation’s borders while reaffirming the enduring partnership between the Indian Army and the local communities.

Through Rann Bhoomi Darshan, the Indian Army continues to promote cultural preservation, national integration, and socio-economic development across India’s border regions. By encouraging tourism to historic frontier battlefields and strengthening engagement with local communities, the initiative reflects the Army’s broader commitment to inclusive development, heritage conservation, and the welfare of India’s border population.
