Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has stressed the importance of technological agility, strategic foresight and institutional innovation in ensuring robust military preparedness amid the evolving security challenges of the contemporary world order.
Addressing soldiers at the Eastern Air Command Headquarters in Shillong, Meghalaya, the Defence Minister highlighted that hybrid threats, cyber warfare, information operations, logistics resilience, supply chain security and unmanned systems have emerged as critical dimensions of modern warfare. He emphasised that traditional military preparedness alone is no longer sufficient to address the complexities of today’s security environment.
Reiterating the significance of self-reliance in defence, the Defence Minister stated that Aatmanirbharta remains central to safeguarding national security on India’s own terms. Referring to Operation Sindoor, he said the operation demonstrated India’s growing indigenous defence capabilities and sent a clear message to terrorists and their handlers that the nation will not compromise on its security and sovereignty.
“The capability, vigilance and unwavering resolve of our Armed Forces have once again showcased India’s growing strength to the world. Formations such as the Eastern Air Command have emerged as key contributors to this broader national vision,” he said.
The Defence Minister described the Eastern Air Command as a vital pillar of security along India’s eastern frontier and commended its contribution towards strengthening national defence. He noted that the command has consistently demonstrated professionalism, courage and commitment across a wide spectrum of operations, including combat readiness, peacetime deployments, disaster response, high-altitude operations and border management.
Praising the personnel serving under challenging operational conditions, Rajnath Singh said their dedication, sacrifice and devotion to duty ensure the safety and security of the nation. He also acknowledged the Armed Forces’ critical role in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations whenever the country faces natural calamities or emergencies.
Highlighting the strategic importance of the North-East, the Defence Minister stated that the region is not merely a geographical frontier but a crucial pillar of India’s security, prosperity and strategic influence. He added that the North-East remains integral to the Government’s Act East Policy and its significance continues to grow as India expands its role on the global stage.
Concluding his address, Rajnath Singh described the Armed Forces as a symbol of national unity and inclusiveness. He noted that the increasing participation of women in the military reflects both institutional progress and India’s enduring cultural values, demonstrating the nation’s ability to embrace modernity while remaining rooted in its core principles.
Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Air Command, Air Marshal Inderpal Singh Walia, and other senior Indian Air Force officers were present during the interaction.
