In a major boost to India’s defence indigenisation drive, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a ₹425 crore contract with Bharat Forge Limited, Pune, for the procurement of 12 sets of 1.25 MW Marine Gas Turbine Generators (MGTGs) for the Indian Navy.
The agreement, signed under the Buy (Indian) category, was formalised in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi today. The project mandates a minimum indigenous content of 60 per cent, aligning with the Government’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India.
According to the MoD, the contract will help establish a robust domestic manufacturing ecosystem for critical naval power-generation equipment while reducing dependence on foreign suppliers. The initiative is expected to strengthen India’s maritime self-reliance in strategic technologies and provide comprehensive indigenous life-cycle support for the systems.
Marine Gas Turbine Generators form a vital component of modern naval warships, supplying electrical power to mission-critical combat systems, advanced sensors, and weapon platforms. The induction of these indigenously manufactured generators is expected to significantly enhance the operational readiness and sustainment capabilities of the Indian Navy.
The contract also marks a significant milestone in developing indigenous capabilities for the design, manufacture, and support of advanced marine power-generation systems, further advancing India’s self-reliance objectives in the defence sector.
