In a significant step towards strengthening regional financial integration, India and Nepal have launched a peer-to-peer (P2P) cross-border remittance mechanism linking India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with Nepal’s National Payments Interface (NPI).
The system, which became operational on June 6, 2026, enables citizens of both countries to make seamless, secure and real-time money transfers directly through mobile banking applications and digital wallets. The initiative is expected to enhance financial inclusion, facilitate cross-border transactions, and further deepen the longstanding economic and people-to-people ties between the two neighbouring nations.
The integration was implemented through a collaboration between NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the international arm of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), and Nepal Clearing House Limited (NCHL).
Officials described the UPI-NPI linkage as a major milestone in digital cooperation between India and Nepal, supporting the broader objective of making cross-border payments more accessible, affordable and efficient.
Boost to Trade, Tourism and Financial Inclusion:
The newly established payment corridor is expected to benefit individuals, businesses and travellers on both sides of the border.
For travellers, the system eliminates the need to carry large amounts of cash or rely on traditional currency exchange mechanisms. Users can now transfer funds instantly through familiar digital payment platforms, ensuring greater convenience and security.
The initiative is also expected to provide a significant boost to local businesses and merchants in Nepal by giving them easier access to a large base of Indian visitors who increasingly prefer digital transactions. Real-time settlements and reduced dependence on cash are likely to improve operational efficiency and lower transaction-related costs for businesses.
Additionally, the remittance mechanism enables direct fund transfers between individuals without requiring conventional banking channels, reducing transaction times and enhancing accessibility for users.
Strengthening Regional Digital Integration:
The launch of the UPI-NPI remittance linkage reflects growing cooperation between India and Nepal in the digital and financial sectors. It aligns with regional efforts to promote safe, affordable and interoperable payment systems while supporting economic integration and financial inclusion.
Expanding Global Footprint of UPI:
The development also highlights the growing international presence of India’s UPI ecosystem. UPI-based payments are currently accepted in nine countries—Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Bhutan, Qatar, Sri Lanka and Cambodia—allowing Indian travellers to make digital payments abroad through familiar platforms.
With the launch of the UPI-NPI remittance mechanism, India and Nepal have taken another important step towards creating a more connected and digitally integrated financial ecosystem in South Asia.
