Prominent Baloch human rights advocate Mir Yar Baloch has addressed a letter to Kaja Kallas, the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, voicing concerns over the European Union’s engagement with Pakistan on counterterrorism issues despite what he described as longstanding allegations regarding Islamabad’s links to proxy networks, militancy, and extremist groups.
The appeal comes after the Eighth Pakistan–European Union Strategic Dialogue held in Islamabad on June 1, 2026. In an open letter, a group identifying itself as the “Republic of Balochistan” expressed disappointment with the joint communiqué issued following the meeting, arguing that principles such as human rights, self-determination, rule of law, and international justice are not being applied consistently to the situation in Balochistan.
According to the letter, the European Union and the broader international community should pay closer attention to allegations of enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, restrictions on journalists, military operations, and displacement affecting Baloch communities. The group called on international organizations, media outlets, and human rights bodies to undertake independent investigations into conditions in the region.
The organization also criticized aspects of the EU–Pakistan partnership framework, particularly cooperation in the areas of counterterrorism and human rights, and argued that international stakeholders should reconsider their approach toward Pakistan while engaging more directly with Baloch representatives.
Among its principal demands, the group called for international recognition of what it describes as an independent Balochistan, increased global scrutiny of human rights concerns in the territory, and the inclusion of Baloch voices in diplomatic discussions concerning South Asia.
The letter further questioned what it described as inconsistencies in international positions on sovereignty, territorial integrity, and self-determination, drawing comparisons with other global conflicts and disputed regions. It also urged the European Union, the United Nations, international media organizations, and independent observers to visit Balochistan and assess conditions on the ground firsthand.
Pakistan maintains that Balochistan is an integral part of the country and has consistently rejected separatist claims. The government has also stated that it remains committed to safeguarding human rights, combating terrorism, and advancing economic development across all provinces.
The open letter underscores the continuing political dispute over Balochistan’s future status and reflects broader debates surrounding human rights, governance, security, and self-determination in the region.
